Current Operations

Contract Mining

New Largo - Pit D

Pit D is an Eskom-producing asset, with a current monthly requirement of approximately 360,000 tonnes of coal and 1 million cubic meters of overburden removal. Recently, Pit D secured several Coal Supply Agreements with Eskom and is now supplying coal to Kusile, Kendal, and Majuba power stations, as well as supplementing New Vaal’s supply from the same reserve. New Largo is preparing to acquire additional production capacity to fulfil its long-term Coal Supply Agreements with Eskom, necessitating more coal extraction from Pit D. The current contract extends to 2028, with an anticipated five-year extension.

Pegasus

Pegasus is a finite coal reserve adjacent to Africoal’s OMS washing plant. It is currently our client’s lowest-cost producer of export-grade coal and will temporarily support production shortfalls from other high-cost export-grade reserves. Given its finite nature, the contract for Pegasus is expected to end in mid-2025.

MMS Rehabilitation

The MMS rehabilitation project involves restoring previously mined areas. This effort focuses on minimising rehabilitation liability exposure, and reduces the assets needed to cover these liabilities.  Africoal plans to expand its rehabilitation services, leveraging the substantial workload and minimal mechanical impact on mining equipment, which can extend fleet life. Africoal has proven to be a reliable partner, demonstrating its capability to accurately price projects and maintain profitability throughout the contract, including fleet recapitalization.

Beneficiation Plants

Inyanda Plant

Our flagship Inyanda plant, acquired in 2015, has a nameplate capacity of 300,000 tonnes of coal per month. Located 21 km northwest of eMalahleni, the double-stage washing plant was upgraded in 2018.
